2007 Open Home Tours
The members of the Stroll Through History Committee extend their warmest welcome and invite you to join us on September 8, 2007, for the 19th anniversary of this community event.
This year, the committee has chosen to feature vintage homes south of Main Street. Check back for more home tour information!
Fait-Hiatt-Childress-Haffner-Campbell Home, 448 Pendegast Street
Featuring an eclectic, Tudor-influenced mix of roofline and broad beams of trim, this home was preceded in 1913 by a literal cabin that the Fait family lived in while building their larger residence. Since assuming ownership in 2004, Glenn Haffner and Chris Campbell have begun to refinish the wood throughout the downstairs, added French doors at the rear of the home and removed carpeting to reveal the original cedar fir floors. This home serves as the Poster Home for the 2007 Stroll Through History.

Whitehouse-Bush-Macula Home, 539 Third Street
This treasure easily is overlooked due to its understated exterior, but visitors lucky enough to be invited inside truly are in for a treat. A circa 1928 Tudor revival with strong cottage influences, the home has enjoyed meticulous, authentic restoration work at the hands of Michele Macula. Since 1995, Michele has scraped, cleaned, painted, dug and worked night and day to reveal the beauty hidden by years of neglect during a long period of serving as a rental property. She has made the most of the many original details that were still intact, as well as the light and airy ambiance atypical in homes of its vintage. Major bathroom, kitchen and landscaping projects are impressive, yet the many small restorations and enhancements throughout are the real shining stars of this remarkable residence.

Hickey-Barzo Home, 543 Third Street
Once known as "The Giraffe House", due to a mottled multi-colored art deco exterior, this classic California Bungalow has matured into a warm and inviting abode, thanks to the attention of current owners Steve and Reva Barzo. Built approximately 1927, the Barzos took ownership twelve years ago, and have embarked on projects that highlight the home's solid frame and ample built-in features. Of particular note, the original picture railing has been re-created throughout the house using a sample from the kitchen, and lighting has been altered in the front room to better complement original fixtures adjacent to the fireplace.

White-Johnson-Grigsby-Alvarez-Robb-Navarette-Reuben-Savala Home, 609 Third Street
The only remaining example of the Second Empire Style in Woodland, this 1882 gem has been home to T.J. and Krista Savala and family for nearly five years. Krista walked by the Mansard roofed home often as a teenager, and found inside a dream come true upon purchase years later, as the previous owners had completed more than $120,000 in restoration and upgrades during their short tenure in the home. Currently remodeling the kitchen, the Savalas also have plans to surround their residence with Victorian landscaping.

Stephens-Hoppin-Cholewinski Home, 644 First Street
A charming 1907 Craftsman with characteristic built-in cabinetry, shelving and nooks and crannies throughout, this home has benefited from major kitchen and garden projects in recent years. After purchasing the home in 2003, Kathy and Pete Cholewinski added nearly 60 rose bushes, an expression of Kathy's on-going involvement with the Woodland Library Rose Club. Other notable features of the residence include original leaded "wavy" glass in the front windows, original stained glass in the entry way and a roof line that interestingly impacts the ceiling structure of the upstairs rooms.

|
Moses-Miller-Ingraham-Briggs-Howell Home, 620 Cross Street
This is the "first home" of the Stroll Through History event; previous owners Lloyd and Ida Ingraham opened this exquisite 123-year-old Italianate Victorian to the public 19 years ago in order to raise funds for the continued conceptualization and development of the event. Current owners Lee Howell and Sandy Briggs-Howell first became enchanted by Lloyd and Ida serving tea outside during the Stroll one year, then later with the notion of growing old in the property just as Lloyd and Ida had begun to do. As fate would have it, they had an opportunity to purchase the dwelling in 1999, and have proceeded to tackle restoration and enhancement projects of every imaginable type and scope. Their hard work and attention to detail are evident around every turn.
