Model Railroads
Being near to the major railroad yards of Sacramento and Roseville, this area has always been an active center of railroading enthusiasm. Trains are integral to the history of Woodland. What literally put Woodland on the map was the arrival of the railroad in 1869. The tracks were originally laid west of town (near present College Street) and the town, which had first developed north of Main Street, began spreading south and west. Woodland was formally incorporated in 1871,
and the next year the railroad tracks were moved to their present location along East Street.
The historic Woodland Train Depot from that era is presently being restored to become a cultural center and museum.
One of the ways of preserving the history of railroading is to represent the trains in accurately scaled model railroad form complete with their many tiny details of landscaping and rail yard equipment.
The Stroll through History will have a narrow gauge track operating model railroad exhibit this year. The trains are replicas of famous antiques but the system is operated by state-of-the art equipment. This remote controlled computer controlled setup complete with authentic railroad sounds is not your grandfather’s model train. See the exhibit at the Porter Building at College and Main Street from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
