BECOMING A PART OF THE STROLL THROUGH HISTORY

The Stroll Through History event is planned and presented entirely by Volunteers. Without our volunteers, this wonderful celebration of our history would not be possible. If you enjoyed the Stroll, and would like to have a part in its planning and/or presentation, the Stroll Through History Committee would like to invite you to get involved. The Committee meets once a month on the second Wednesday of the month for most of the year and more frequently as crunch time approaches in August. The members of the committee get enormous satisfaction from seeing their yearlong planning efforts bear fruit on Stroll day.

Seeing so many of our residents, as well as visitors from all over California, an occasional visitor from out of state or even from other countries, enjoying our presentation of the history of Woodland is truly gratifying. One of our open home homeowners for 2003, Linda Moderow, put out a guest book for visitors to sign and included in the book were visitors from Oklahoma and Germany. Our volunteers on Stroll day, open home docents, musicians and entertainers, stage crews, and so many others who are critical to a successful stroll should also be proud of their part in the Stroll. It is gratifying to know that Woodland and its history will be shared with people from so far away as these visitors share their experience with friends and family.

OTHER WAYS TO IMPROVE THE STROLL
  • If your job, or working as a volunteer with another community organization, requires you to work downtown on Stroll day, wear clothing with a period feel. Ideas can be found in old movies, magazines, pictures on our website, or by searching on the internet. It could be as simple as a white shirt and bow tie for men or a calico sundress for women. Often, the Opera House Guild will make their costumes available for rent for Stroll day. Even this kind of participation helps to create a historical atmosphere.
  • Offer cookies and refreshments (iced tea, lemonade, water, etc.) to visitors on the stroll routes. If you own an old home, share the history with those who stop by; when it was built, for whom and the builder if known. If you have restored features of your home, and have before and after pictures, make a display board with pictures of your restoration work.

In appreciation of the volunteers that make this event what it is, each year the Stroll committee invites all volunteers working through the Stroll Through History Committee to an appreciation dinner. The homeowners of the open homes are presented with a special gift and recognition is given to the volunteers that make this event happen with good food, and a chance to meet other volunteers and recap the day's highlights.
